Decorating for Halloween? Clean These Spots First

Halloween decorating is one of the best ways to bring a little seasonal fun into your home. Pumpkins on the mantel, spooky decorations on the shelves, cobwebs in the corners, and festive touches around the front door can transform an ordinary room into something delightfully eerie. But before you bring out the bins of decorations, take a few minutes to clean the spaces where they’ll go. A little preparation helps your decorations look their best and keeps dust and dirt from getting trapped underneath them until the holidays are over.

Start with the mantel and shelves. These surfaces are prime real estate for Halloween decorations, but they’re also easy places for dust to accumulate throughout the year. Remove picture frames, candles, figurines, and other everyday décor, then wipe the entire surface before arranging your pumpkins, skeletons, and spooky displays. Pay special attention to the corners and edges where dust tends to settle. If you’re decorating open shelves, take the opportunity to wipe the items you plan to put back, too. There’s little point in cleaning the shelf only to return dusty decorations to it.

Don’t forget your windowsills. Windowsills are often overlooked during routine cleaning, yet they can collect dust, dead insects, and debris that blows in from outside. They’re also popular spots for little pumpkins, Halloween candles, and seasonal figurines. Remove everything from the sill, vacuum up loose debris if needed, and wipe the surface with a soft cloth and an appropriate gentle cleaner. If you plan to use window clings or other decorations on the glass, clean the glass first so the decorations adhere properly and don’t highlight fingerprints or smudges.

Give your entryway some attention, too. Your front door is often the first place guests notice your Halloween decorations, whether you’re hanging a wreath, displaying a seasonal sign, or arranging pumpkins on the porch. Wipe away fingerprints around the door handle, clean the surrounding trim, and dust any ledges where decorations will sit. Indoors, give the entryway floor and nearby baseboards a quick clean before placing decorative baskets, lanterns, or other seasonal accents. This small reset makes the whole display feel more intentional and welcoming, even when the decorations themselves are designed to be a little creepy.

Clean light fixtures and lamps before dressing up the room. Warm, low lighting can create the perfect spooky atmosphere, but dusty lampshades and light fixtures can take away from the effect. Turn lights off and allow bulbs to cool before cleaning. Dust lampshades gently according to their material, and wipe accessible fixture surfaces with a suitable cloth. If you’re adding decorative lights, make sure the area around outlets and cords is free of dust and clutter. Keep fabric, paper, and other flammable decorations away from hot bulbs and heating elements, and never cover a light fixture with cloth to create a Halloween effect.

Look behind and underneath your decorations, too. It is tempting to simply move a few things aside and decorate around them, especially when you’re eager to get everything arranged. But dust often gathers beneath picture frames, vases, clocks, and everyday accessories that rarely get moved. Before setting out your Halloween display, lift those items, wipe the surface beneath them, and clean any visible fingerprints or smudges on the surrounding area. This is particularly helpful on dark furniture, glass tables, and glossy surfaces where dust and fingerprints can stand out.

If you’re decorating with artificial cobwebs, be selective about where they go. Store bought spiderwebs are a Halloween favorite, but they can cling to furniture, snag on delicate items, and become difficult to remove from textured surfaces. Dust the intended area first, and avoid stretching synthetic webbing over electronics, ceiling fans, vents, or anything that needs to remain unobstructed. Keep decorations away from smoke alarms and sprinklers, too. When Halloween is over, remove the webbing carefully so it doesn’t leave fibers behind or pull at delicate finishes.

Finally, prepare the bathroom and guest spaces if you’re expecting visitors. Halloween parties and trick-or-treat gatherings can mean extra foot traffic through your home. Before guests arrive, wipe bathroom counters and mirrors, check the hand soap and clean towels, and give frequently touched surfaces a quick refresh. In the main gathering areas, check side tables, coffee tables, and seating for dust, crumbs, or fingerprints. These aren’t necessarily the places where your Halloween decorations will go, but they’re the details that help the entire home feel ready for company.

The best part of cleaning before decorating is that you only have to move everything once. Instead of lifting pumpkins and figurines later to clean beneath them, you can start with a fresh surface and enjoy your display throughout the season. And when it’s finally time to pack away the ghosts and goblins, you’ll have fewer hidden layers of dust waiting underneath.

A little preparation makes room for the fun part: turning your home into a festive Halloween hideaway. After all, even the spookiest house deserves a clean start!
