Put the Sparkle Back in Your Oven

Your oven works hard, and over time, baked on grease, food splatters, and crumbs can build up on the bottom and around the sides. The good news is that you don’t need strong chemical cleaners to get your oven looking fresh again. A few simple ingredients and a little patience can go a long way.

Before you begin, make sure your oven is completely cool and remove the racks. Start by wiping out any loose crumbs and food debris with a damp cloth or paper towel. For the tougher buildup, make a simple paste using baking soda and a small amount of water. Spread the paste over the dirty areas of the oven, avoiding the heating elements, and let it sit for several hours or, even better, overnight. This gives the baking soda time to loosen the grease and baked on mess so you don’t have to spend as much time scrubbing.

When you’re ready to clean it off, use a damp sponge or cloth to wipe away the paste. For stubborn spots, a little extra gentle scrubbing may be needed. You can also use a small amount of white vinegar on your cloth to help lift away remaining residue. Don’t be surprised if the baking soda and vinegar fizz when they meet, that reaction can help loosen residue, but you don’t need to mix large amounts together for the cleaning to work.

Don’t forget about the oven racks. Let them soak in warm, soapy water for a while, then use a non-abrasive sponge or brush to remove stuck-on food. Rinse them thoroughly and dry them before putting them back in the oven.

Once everything is clean, give the inside of the oven one final wipe with a clean, damp cloth to make sure no residue remains. Keeping up with small spills as they happen can also make future cleanings much easier. A quick wipe here and there can prevent those little messes from turning into layers of baked on buildup.

A clean oven doesn’t have to involve overpowering fumes or complicated products. Sometimes, a few simple ingredients, the right technique, and a little elbow grease are all you need to bring your oven back to a fresh, clean starting point!
